Chapter 18

Jasmine smiled at the two interns who entered through the door of Vines & Soul’s kitchen. She had just gotten on top of the internship this morning when Lisa had understandably called in for a day off. Her uncle, William, had gone missing after his sanctuary exploded. The police had just informed her.

Jasmine knew better, as she had gotten inside information from Beatrice. Samuel believed William had been turned into a supernatural before they had their discussion about the lot of land and his agreement to sell it. As for what he had been turned into, Samuel wasn’t sure.

Beatrice had noticed the stench of blood and rotting corpses before the building exploded. Jasmine suspected it had to do with vampires, but again, the method of execution was too unlike that of the Red Phantom for her to draw a connection.

She greeted the interns.

“Jasmine.”

“Nathan,” said a tanned man with a generous smile and curly dark brown hair that accentuated his striking green eyes. “We talked briefly last year. I remember you. You’re the owner of the vineyard. Thank you so much for accepting us.” He grinned.

“Fiona,” said the woman, smiling.

Jasmine vaguely remembered reading through their applications a while ago and recalled they were both in their early twenties. Still children, she thought. Full of life, energy, enthusiasm, and the quest for knowledge. Typical traits of interns who had joined Vines & Soul over the years.

Fiona seemed shy. She had a controlled but gorgeous smile. Jasmine read some anxiety in her, which was understandable. They were both so young and had come here all the way from Europe. Nathan might have taken a few trips on his own before, but she could tell this was Fiona’s first time traveling.

“I’m sorry Lisa couldn’t be here today. But she made all the necessary arrangements for you. Let me take you on a tour of the place.” She gestured toward the door. “Do you like where you’re staying?”

“Yes, thank you,” said Fiona.

“Let’s head outside. I’ll give you a tour and introduce you to our production manager. You both studied winemaking right?”

They nodded.

“I assume I don’t have to go over the basics then.”

“No, we’re good,” said Nathan. “I spent a year working at a vineyard in Italy,”

“I spent six months in a winery in France,” Fiona said. “I focus more on the branding and marketing of the wine rather than the making of it. But I think I understand it well enough.”

Jasmine nodded. “Okay, here are the business essentials. Vines & Soul is organized into three sections. We have the restaurant and the store at the front. That’s how we get to know the people and build our reputation because we don’t sell wines in the popular retail stores. We distribute to boutique and high-end outlets. So here, we build our reputation by letting people taste our wines at the cellar door and by pairing excellent wine with excellent food in the restaurant.”

“Will we learn how to cook?” asked Fiona.

“No, but you will learn food and wine appreciation.
